LEP Assignment
At Central Middle School, my mentor teacher uses different methods that align with the SIOP framework and she makes it more comprehensible for the LEP learners. She uses thumbs up/down, which is where students use their thumbs on whether they agree or disagree. In the band room, this strategy is used by asking students if they liked how a certain section played and then elaborated on what they liked or disliked. This helps all students to stay focused and improves listening skills by pushing them to listen.
Another strategy that is used based on the cognitive strategy. The band director makes connections between the music and the story of the piece. For example, one of the pieces they are playing is based …show more content…
There are moments where the mentor does too much talking and not enough playing. Middle school band is different from a regular middle school classroom. At this age, students can lose interest very easily so when it is in a band setting, the band director needs to move quickly and not talk too much. The 3-2-1 strategy would be great way for students to think about three things they accomplished and remember it, talk about what they liked in the rehearsal and ask only one question pertaining to the rehearsal (Action strategy handout, p. 6-7).
The learning strategy that would have worked for this specific lesson would be scaffolding which is based off of the cognitive learning strategy (SIOP handout). I would start by encouraging the students to be more willing to face the challenges of playing their piece and monitor what they do. I would do my best to help the students overcome their challenges through the warm up and continually remind them to stay positive on how to approach what they play. I would attempt this strategy because there were students in the room that were having issues and needed guidance on how to fix their mistakes (Moreno, p.
