Shingles vaccine is a vaccine approved by US Food and Drug Administration and also by the European Commission. There is a risk of shingles in those persons who have had chickenpox. Its cause is considered to be the reactivation of chicken pox virus. Vaccine is the only way to reduce the risk of developing the contagious shingles. It is a contagious viral infection but cannot transmit from one to another person. The patients suffering from shingles can transmit VZV (varicella zoster virus) to others. Patients who never suffered from chickenpox can develop chickenpox if gets infected with VZV but would not be affected with shingles. It is not as contagious as chickenpox. The time period to be contagious varies in both the infections.

Patients of chickenpox are contagious few days before appearance of rashes and remain until all blisters have scabbed. On the other hand, patients of shingles are not contagious before occurrence of blisters and no longer contagious after the rashes are stabbed.

The vaccine is given in the form of injection in the upper arm. Only one injection would work.
