Short term memory takes place in the occipital lobe of the brain and this type of memory is anything that has been done, remembered, touched or listened to within 30 seconds after the 30 seconds this information can either be forgotten or if the information is repeated frequently, which is called maintenance rehearsal, it can pass to long term memory. Short term memory is very limited and cannot hold a lot of information because the capacity for the information that short term memory can hold is limited. There have been experiments that have led to characteristics of short term memory, chunking and the seven (plus or minus two theory). There experiments took …show more content…
The other characteristics of short term memory is chunking, chunking is when people put numbers or letters into groups to hopefully remember the information for more 30 seconds, but many information involved in chunking may not last long and can be forgotten if someone tries to remember multiple information. People tend to put things into groups when the numbers have a meaning to them and when the numbers do not have a meaning people may not tend to put them into groups.
An experience I had and continue to have with short term memory is when I am studying for an exam and with memorizing information. When studying for exams it takes me longer than what it has to be to remember the information, I can constantly repeat the information for hours and only ¼ of the information will stick with me. This has been a challenge in my life, especially when it comes to school, but I try my hardest in studying and trying to remember and while studying I often have to remember a word in the definition so that I can remember the meaning by the word in the
