1a. The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain involved in speaking, muscle movements, and making judgments and plans. In making preparations for the AP exam, the prefrontal cortex could be use to judge how much time is required for studying and to plan what days a person will study.

1b. The hippocampus is the component of the limbic system that processes memory. In preparing for the AP exam, the hippocampus processes new memories of facts from your AP course notes or textbook when learning and studying.

Mnemonics are memory aids. Mnemonics could be used to help remember a lengthy concept on the AP exam through organizational devices or through vivid imagery. For example, using the method of loci, one could imagine himself moving through a familiar series of locations and associate each place with a visual representation of a part of the brain to help remember all the parts of the brain.

1e. The Law of Effect in operant conditioning states that behavior followed by favorable consequences become more likely, and that behavior followed by unfavorable consequences become less likely. When studying for the AP exam, the student could be rewarded with each time he scores a 4 or 5 on a practice AP exam, and have his phone taken away for 2 hours each time he scores a 3 or below on a practice AP exam.

Confirmation bias is a tendency to search for information that confirms one’s perceptions. People often deceive themselves into thinking their perception is true and widely agreed with by most through searching only for information that confirms their perception. He or she will not recognize information opposing his or her position, thus making his or her belief appear to be true and widely accepted.

2c. Cognitive dissonance theorizes that we act to reduce the discomfort we feel when our thoughts are inconsistent. People deceive themselves by changing their attitudes to match their beliefs. They wish to reduce the discomfort felt when two thoughts are inconsistent so they change themselves and lie to themselves, believing their lies to be true in order to reduce the discomfort.

2d. The placebo effect is an effect on behavior caused when a substance is administered and the substance is expected to be an active agent. People will feel the effects of an active agent when they believe they were administered the treatment, even if the substance does not have any real effects.
