The word nation means different things to different people but most definitions of nation usually follow the lines of a group of people sharing a common land, culture and/or beliefs, furthermore nationalism can be defined as a people's feeling of identifying with their nation. I believe that nation should be the foundation of identity because when groups of people choose to identify with their nation and each they can work together towards common goals and shared prosperity. At the time Quebec was greatly influenced by the Catholic Church which in the 1850’s had told Quebec citizens to continue living a simple agrarian lifestyle instead of industrializing, as a result anglophones from other provinces had control over most businesses in Quebec causing the Francophone population to be marginalized. It wasn't until the mid 1970’s that the Quebecois stopped founding their identity on the principals of the Catholic Church and begin identifying with the nation of Quebec through the Parti Quebecois, the PQ supported the Francophone Quebecois nation by enacting bill 101 making french Quebec’s only official language, this bill ensured the safety of the Francophone Quebecois nation and ended the marginalization of Francophones in Quebec.
