Should the word ‘nigger’ be seen as inappropriate in our culture presently after its use and meaning throughout the era of slavery? The famous author Mark Twain of the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn written 125 years ago has sparked controversy amongst the country as the word is found to be unnecessary by some, but crucial to others. Huckleberry Finn, a white teenager in the years of slavery objects to societies standards of being deemed as civilized. He becomes very well acquainted with a slave named Jim, who has ran away after news broke out that he was going to be sold. Slavery in the United States occurred until the year of 1865, with individuals of African descent being mal treated as they were forced to work for those in which were affluent and or often caucasian. The word ‘nigger’ was used to degrade those with dark colored skin to make them feel less than those with a light colored complexion. However, in the current years, some would say that the word has been ‘lifted’ of its degrading meaning as it is being used by our culture, including various different art platforms. As the novel is taken place in the south throughout the early 1800s, this word is not strange to the vocabulary of those partaking. Author Mark Twain is known to be critical of human behavior and therefore went to capture the true dialect,tone, and environment of the given setting. According to a Cbs 60 episode, “If you replace that with the word slave, of course people would be less bothered, but I think Twain wants people to be a little bit bothered” (www.cbs.com).
