Show Choir The bright stage lights blinded me briefly before my eyes adjusted. Adrenaline pumped through me as I moved to stand in my place on stage and struck my starting pose- It was showtime. I always enjoyed music as a child, but I did not believe I had what it took to be a performer. But, as soon as I did my first performance, I knew I had found what I loved to do. Unfortunately, it wasn't as easy as it seemed when I started. When my mother first signed me up for show choir in 6th grade, I struggled to connect with the other girls in my group. I worried that they were more experienced than me and that I would look amateur. They tended to leave me out as they were already friends. I love showing up each week and seeing my friends while we sing, dance, and of course laugh. We have the privilege of great choreographers and a director who pushes us to be our best. Even when they criticize us, we know that it's only to help us improve. They teach us lessons not only about singing and dancing, but also about life. Emphasizing the idea of coming together as a team and working together will make us better in the end. I remember my director would say, “It’s a we thing, not a me thing.” Another aspect that I love is the performance. Being able to show off to friends and family the songs and choreography that you've been working on for months is an amazing feeling. But, you worry about making the wrong move or singing the wrong note. Yet, even if there is a flaw, nobody cares or notices. They are there to support you, so anything that goes wrong is unimportant. The best part is being complimented after the show for your effort. As I look back on my journey through show choir, the people I’ve met and the lessons it has taught me have helped me grow as a person and performer. I appreciate the joy and togetherness that it brings to people, no matter the
