Fitzgerald and Luhrmann present different characteristics of the characters in the book and the movie. For example, when Tom takes Nick to his and Myrtle’s apartment, Nick says, “I have been drunk just twice in my life, and the second time was that afternoon…” (Fitzgerald 29). It is shown that Nick almost never has gotten drunk in his whole life except for those few times. However, in the movie Luhrmann shows, that Nick starts out at a mental institution for “morbidly alcoholic” (Luhrmann). This is two distinct Nick in the book and the movie. One is an alcoholic Nick, who got drunk because of Gatsby, and the other Nick who doesn’t get drunk very often. Tom is shown to be a person who you can dislike, but in the movie he is shown to be a villain.
