Functions of the skeletal system
Support
The skeleton acts as a frame to house all the organs of the body. This is vital so that the body can actually operate. e.g. The cranium supports the brain.
Protection
The skeleton acts as a protective system to prevent the organs from getting damaged. They act as a buffer between any impact that may occur. It helps to absorb the vibrations so that the organs are kept safe. e.g. The ribs will protect the lungs from an impact from a hockey ball hitting the upper torso.
Attachment
The skeleton is vital for the muscles to attach to the bones to allow movement at the joints. Without the attachment there would be very little movement possible. Any movement that would be possible would …show more content…
It also is responsible for making the white blood cells that are responsible for protecting the body from foreign micro-organisms. This is helpful when playing hockey as oxygen is needed in order for respiration to occur during aerobic respiration.
Store of minerals
The skeleton also provides a place for minerals to be stored. The two main minerals stored are calcium and phosphorous. Both of these are essential for muscle and nerve …show more content…
It links the femur and the ilium to allow movement in the lower leg, so that maybe a run can be possible. The movements possible at the hip joint are flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, medial rotation (tuning into the mid-line of the body) and lateral rotation (turning away from the mid-line of the body). These movements can be useful in a game situation for example Flexion can be used when kicking a rugby ball when they follow through with the kick. The femur is an example of a bone in the appendicular skeleton. It is also a long bone as it is longer than it is wide. Ilium is a flat bone also in the appendicular skeleton. The hip is vital in almost all sporting movements as it is the base for turning the upper body and also linking movements in the legs for kicking or running. The ilium is used to protect the bladder rectum along with some of the reproductive
