By the 19th Century, America became very reliant on slaves, especially with the Southern States. The south became an agrarian society, where the economy was based around the production and growth or tobacco, rice, sugar, cotton, wheat and hemp. With more labour shortages, landowners who produced and grew such riches would buy African slaves, as they were very cheap. If there were no slaves situated in the southern states, the economy would drop dramatically as the riches (i.e. cotton) would either not be produced and grown at all, or production and growth would be in small batches that would take an incredibly long time to do so. The south was reliant on producing goods, due to the south not participating in the Industrial Revolution in America
