The value that I anticipate being recognized from this IT solution encompasses the trifecta of strategic goals, namely, exceptional patient experience, improved quality and enhanced financial strength. Specifically, I anticipate this IT solution will result in an improved patient experience through improved sleep; decrease sleep deprivation induced delirium and ultimately improved financial strength through decreased ICU length of stay as a result of decreased delirium. Delirium is a significant contributor for increased ICU morbidity and mortality and patients with delirium experience …show more content…
al., 2008). This value will be measured using both qualitative and quantitative metrics. Qualitative measures that will need to be tracked and reported for this project will include a patient survey regarding the patient’s perception of sleep and a nursing survey regarding how the nurse perceived and observed that the patient slept; an example of a survey that could be used for this assessment is the Richards – Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (Kamdar et.al., 2012). The quantitative measures that will need to be tracked and reported include a daily assessment of delirium using the CAM-ICU (Inouye, 1990), and the ICU patient length of stay. Fortunately, the CAM-ICU and ICU length of stay are both currently measured at my so it will be easy to track changes in these metrics to assess the impact of this IT solution. It will be imperative to obtain baseline measures of both qualitative and quantitative measures prior to implementation of the new IT solution. Once the solution is implemented, it will be necessary to continue to track this data monthly in order to monitor for trends and signs of outcome …show more content…
Failure to create an environment that can promote sleep through decreased noise will mitigate any potential value from this intervention. I was so excited when I saw that our reading this week included the TED Talk from Simon Sinek. I was introduced to Mr. Sinek’s concept of WHY a couple of years ago and it has remained a resounding concept for me professionally. I think this concept will play a key role in bedside nurses embracing the use of mobile devices in their work flow. Administrators cannot simply tell nurses what the mobile devices are capable of doing and the increased functionality that the devices will provide. It will be imperative to help the nurses to embrace why this change is being recommended. In other words, the nursing staff needs to share the vision. Simon Sinek states that people choose to do business with or work for, organizations that believe what they believe and not merely organizations that have what they need. People who follow leaders or ideas do so because they feel inspired by the leader and the vision; they follow because they want to for themselves and not simply for the leader (Sinek, 2010). I am passionate about patient care and improving the patient experience. Helping nurses to share the vision
