Supporters believe that they are portable, fast, and affordable which makes learning more effective and easier, while people who oppose believe that they will just be a distraction, as people can browse social media and play games while they are supposed to be learning.
Personally, I believe that they can benefit the classroom, as they create a more comfortable learning environment for students. Smartphones help students in the fact that they can do the same features as computers, but they’re mobile. They allow students to type essays and surf the web. Not only does this help them accomplish assignments anywhere, the small keyboards and other features like text by voice allow students to type faster, unlike large computer keyboards where they pluck slowly. Another feature that benefits students is the ability for phones to store textbooks. This makes it easier to find information and takes the hassle away from carrying heavy, old-fashioned books. Lastly, the camera capabilities make it easy to share information and memories from school trips.
With technology still advancing, smartphone ownership will continue to grow and it is expected that in five years every K-12 student will be using a mobile device. I believe that books will become obsolete as everything becomes more digital, and smartphone usage in schools will continue to grow and be a common part of learning. Do to many advancements in technology, cell phones and other mobile devices play a big role in human lives, the question is whether or not they benefit classroom learning.
