The Negative Effects of Social Media on Teen Males When it comes to the negative effects of social media, the majority of people are quick to think that social media victimizes only females. However, many males are negatively affected by social media just as much as women are. Teen males themselves, are overly exposed to the over dramatization of how a male should pursue to be. Due to the over exposure, many teen males go through depression, develop low self-esteem and encounter weight disorders. As well as females, males can go through a transition of depression. A majority of people are not aware, but males are being pushed to the edge as well to conform to society’s “perfect” image of a male. According to Dr. Raymond Lemberg “The media has become more of an equal opportunity discriminator. Men’s bodies are not good enough either” (Cruz). In regards to what Lemberg stated, males are prone to feel as if they are not “good enough”. Many teen males have developed low self-esteem due to the fact that many teen males want to “perfect” themselves so that they can be “real men”. Males are categorized to look like big hunks of beef, super athletic and ones that can get all the ladies, however, those are just unrealistic expectations. As “for many boys who lack athletic ability, or physical prowess, this can be extremely discouraging, making them feel weak or outcast” (Ridgway). Many teen males believe that without those characterizations, they will never be considered “real men”. Many teen males feel discouraged because they are manipulated to believe that they must change themselves in order to have it all and to be accepted into society.
