Since the beginning of civilization there has always been people who have decided to help their peers, but no one has been more helpful and generous than the social reformers. These people showed a friendlier human nature towards people who lived through oppression and poverty. Although people might have judged the social reformers and accused them of being condescending and judgmental, the social reformers were people who were generous and helpful because they helped establish settlement houses that provided immigrants with a safe haven and classes to help them establish a new life in the United States. The social reformers came into the world during a time where many immigrants were traveling into the United States. The new people who began their journey in Ellis Island were unaware of the perilous journey ahead of them. New immigrants were seen as people who lacked class, and intelligence. These people believed it was their duty to improve the living conditions for the poor. The social reformers stuck to their beliefs and became one of the most generous people the United States has seen because they helped change the way the immigrants were viewed in the United States. The social reformers, “caused people through civic instruction in the public schools the immigrants slowly became urbanized… and the habits of their entire family modified” (Addams). These righteous deeds also encouraged other people to open up settlement houses because people noticed that change could only be brought to the U.S. when people are educated, so that they could contribute to
