In this assignment I will discuss the two different models of health. These models of health are the following: bio-medical model of health and socio-medical model of health. I will also criticize the strengths and weaknesses of each model of health.

Bio medical model of health concentrates mainly on the biological and physical health of an individual. This means that this model does not focus on the social factors such as emotional and psychological health that may affect a person’s well-being. Bio – medical model of health believes that if an individual is free from any disease, illness, defect or pain, he or she is already considered healthy even if the person has emotional problems. This is because there are countries that could not afford the medical technologies. Lastly, even if for example the curing stage is already happening there no 100% that it will be successful like cancer. The biomedical approach may not, for example, take into account the role sociological factors like family, social class, or a patient's environment may have on causing a health condition, and thus offer little insight into how illness may be prevented.
On the other hand, socio – medical model of health mainly focuses on the social factors that affect an individual’s health such as poverty, diet, culture, media and others. It does not look at the biological and physical aspects of health like diseases and illnesses. It is different from bio – medical model of health because it looks at how diseases and illnesses can be prevented rather than curing them. The purpose of this model of health is to educate people on how to take care of themselves to be free from illnesses and diseases. The examples of socio – medical model of health include having programmes that teach people how to change their lifestyle or teach them ways to prevent skin problems because too much sun exposure.
The main advantage of this model of health is that it prevents diseases and illnesses from happening. This means that people will be motivated to change their lifestyle to have a healthy life. In addition, there will be less cost needed because people will not need to cure the disease because socio – medical model of health already prevents the disease before it happens. The effect of this is that it will improve the quality of life of an individual.
However, there are also disadvantages of socio – medical model of health. The first drawback is that it does not look at the physical and bio – medical factors that may affect an individual’s health. Another disadvantage is that not many people may find too easy to change their lifestyle to prevent diseases or illnesses from happening. Moreover, there are illnesses and diseases that cannot be prevented therefore having this model will become
