Prior to this lesson, I had a basic understanding of sociology. I knew that sociology focused on the “big picture” rather than individual issues. I also knew that sociology is an academic field that focuses on research. What I did not realize is how closely it relates to other social science field such as Criminal Justice and Social Work. As a Criminal Justice major I have spent the past three years focusing on courts, policing and probation. I now have the opportunity to look at these from a sociological perspective as I continue through this course.
