Sojourner Truth, a slave who became a freedwoman, born with the name Isabella Baumfree on November 1797 in Hurley. Truth was known as the first black women orator to speak out against slavery.Truth wanted to make a difference in the lives of the African-American men and the women, whose rights were stolen.
When someone earns their freedom back after a life of torture, a goal in life is what comes to mind before than anything else. Truth had a goal. Truth did not know how to write nor how to speak fluently in English. Truth was not educated. Yet, she captured the public’s attention by her physical appearance and her courage in speaking. According to “The Truth about Sojourner”, Physically, her appearance was startling.Sojourner Truth knew what people thought of her. White people were never scared of the African-American population in her period. They controlled them they wouldn’t even bother listening to African-Americans, so why would Sojourner Truth startle the public, catch their attention and make them listen?From a source entitled “Sojourner Truth”, Her speaking style was unique.
