Sojourner Truth Hello readers, this essay is about a famous African American, Sojourner Truth. Sojourner Truth was born in 1797 in New York. Sojourner Truth was an abolitionist slave and died in 1881 with a bunch of people mourning her death. Sojourner Truth gave a big speech called “Ain't I A Woman Too?”. She was bought and sold 4 times with one of her masters promising to let her free but they never kept their promise so Sojourner Truth ran away to an abolitionist family. A random fact about Sojourner is if she was (somehow) still alive today, she would be 227 years old. Sojourner Truth was an abolitionist and advocate for the rights of women. She was born a slave in 1797 and named Isabella Baumfee by her parents John and Elizabeth Baumfee. Isabella changed her name to Sojourner Truth in 1843. She changed her name when she became Christian, Sojourner because she was to travel up and down the land showing people their sins and signing them. Truth because she was going to declare truth onto people, guiding them to the Lord. Sojourner was the first African American to win a lawsuit against the United States because her son was illegally sold for slavery. When she fought for her son's freedom, a newspaper accused her of being a witch that poisoned a religious leader of the religious group she was a part of and sued them for slander and won a $125 judgment.
