Spanish Family Participant Observation

For my participant observation I observed a Spanish family of five. The parents in this family immigrated to New York from Spain in the early 90’s and the three children were the first generation to be born as American citizens. In 2002 they moved to San Angelo, Texas, where I had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with them. This participant observation is a little different for me because I have in some way been observing the family for over a decade. Spending time with this family I have found that they are very family-oriented, very protective and close to each other, very open with each other, and have an incredibly welcoming atmosphere. I am always invited over for home cooked meals, which are Spanish recipes consisting mostly of Spanish rice, tortillas, beans, and rich spices. The family is a very welcoming and kind family, they tend to keep to themselves but if anyone ever needs anything they do not hesitate to reach out to them. The daughters are 20 and 15, and the son is 22. They spend a lot of time together and are very protective of each other. The father and mother are both hard working people in their own ways. The older the children were, the more their groups were divided by sex. I noticed that the younger children and the female teenagers stood just as close and physical to their friends as the adults, but the teenage males tended to stand farther back from each other and lacked as much eye contact with each other. They son of the family I observed I have always noticed that he spends more time looking up or looking down than making direct eye contact, almost as if he’s avoiding it with anyone that he speaks to.
