Consequences of spanking In an article published by CNN on July 24, 2014, in which the author Sarah Kovac highlighted the detrimental effects of spankings on children, according the several researches that have been conducted, harsh corporal punishment (HCP) can alter the child’s brain. In a report released by NCBI, it was indicated that “the prefrontal cortical gray matter volume in young adults exposed to harsh corporal punishment reduces significantly.”( NCBI)The report further stated that “Harsh corporal punishment (HCP) during childhood is a chronic, developmental stressor associated with depression, aggression and addictive behaviors. What is spanking associated with? Aggression. Delinquency. Mental health problems, and something called "hostile attribution bias," which causes children, essentially, to expect people to be mean to them. Brain development including, but not limited to IQ. The CNN report further stated “It’s uncertain at this point the extent of physical and psychological damages related to the use of spanking as corrective methods on children. It’s unclear how high the number of children are affected by this practice. The proliferation of these transgressions stretches far beyond the boundaries of the immediate consequences that we can perceive, such as physical deformations and or development of antisocial behaviors are some of the most common by-product of these practices. So to come to a concluding mark, as it has just been illustrated, spanking proves to be a very negative choice when it comes to disciplining our children. A whole list of negative impacts that this outdated practice has been presented, so we can now see what this practice can have on the physical and emotional health of children. Alternative methods to correcting behaviors deemed inappropriate has also been presented without further using the method of spanking, which is proven to be an ineffective way to discipline children. So to conclude, spanking shouldn’t be utilized because it proves to lead to more aggressive towards parents and other moral authorities by leaving physical and lasting emotional scars on our children. “Positive child outcomes are more likely when parents refrain from using spanking and other physical punishment, and instead disciplining their children through communication that is firm, reasoned, and nurturing. Studies find that these types of discipline can foster positive psychological outcomes, such as high self-esteem, cooperation with others, as well as improved achievement in school,”
