The second sphere of focus, the military, was an aspect of society in which Sparta was most well known for as opposed to Athens’ inclination to political, cultural, and philosophical paths. Spartan infantry were equal parts revered and feared by the rest of Greece, as well as the rest of the ancient world that came into contact with them. All free males were taken at the age of seven to live in the barracks with other boys and men until the age of thirty. Training was grueling and intense, spending most of their time hunting, exercising, practicing with weapons and armor, and being taught Spartan values of valor and heroism. The Spartan Navy on the other hand was extremely small as a result of there being no main bodies of water nearby, and was instead used mainly for means of transporting the army. Those who proved incapable of completing their training were, “publicly disgraced and denied the status of being an Alike,” (Hunt, 65). Unlike Spartan practice, Athenian boys were required to attend only two years of military school once they reached the age of eighteen. Again, unlike the Spartans, Athenian power was tied directly to their naval superiority. The incorporation of triremes, warships rowed by 170 men on three levels and equipped with a sturdy battering ram at the bow, lent to their power overseas and their ability to prevent an enemy from reaching their shores.
