Peter Parker, who is a shy and nerdy student who is often bullied by Flash Thompson, travels with his fellow classmates to a science lab. He stops to take a picture of Mary Jane beside the spider showcase for the school newspaper. A genetically-altered, radioactive spider escapes the presentation case and bites Peter on the right hand. This causes Peter to gain “spider-like” powers, such as shooting webs, climbing walls, and increased physical strength that he never had before.
The spider bite acts as Peter’s call to adventure because it helps him to escape his normal everyday routine of being the geeky kid that no one notices and inspires him to set about a journey of stopping crime and saving lives.

Initially, he is tested emotionally when Mary Jane begins to date Peter’s best friend Harry. When the press finds out about Spider-Man, they make him seem evil, rather than heroic. Spider-Man then meets the Green Goblin, who is the antagonist of the movie. His main goals are to dominate the city with his power and sabotage Spider-Man. Later, Spider-Man and Mary Jane both get attacked by the Green Goblin. Harry’s father (who is the Green Goblin) realizes that Peter is Spider-Man, causing an internal conflict for Peter. Also, the Green Goblin tries to force Peter to make the decision to save Mary Jane or the individuals on the air
