Spina Bifida is a birth defect, classified under medical term ‘neural tube defects’. This defect forms due to incomplete embryological development. Spina Bifida happens when the spinal cord fails to mature necessity. The spinal column insufficiently covers the spinal cord in the neural tube. Genetic, nutritional and environmental factors cause spina bifida. A key element of spina bifida is the mother’s diet deficiency of folic acid. Other hazards include parents who suffers from obesity or neglect in diabetes management.

For instance, Boston Children’s Hospital’s research for improved surgical techniques had led to a recent discovery for treating hydrocephalus. This treatment is called the endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). ETV involves neurosurgery as a hole is created in the skull. An endoscope enters into the third ventricle, then an extra hole is created beneath it. The intention is for the cerebrospinal fluid to escape through the holes and be absorbed by the brain.
