Putting Less Emphasis on Standardized Testing Scores Did your dream college reject you because of a bad score on a standardized test? If so, then you are one of many other people with the same experience. Standardized tests are used as a way for colleges to see an overall view of what one knows. Colleges and universities should put less emphasis on standardized test scores, which show capabilities in an overview of academics and no necessarily in the field that is being pursued. The standardized tests are very limited on showing what a person’s capabilities are. There is only so much information that one test can have. A test taken in one day does not show all of what a person has learned over a course of many semesters and many hours. An ordinary person may not have the capacity or the ability to memorize all of the information that is being tested over. “The nature of a student’s college experience—the work that he or she puts into it, the self-examination that’s undertaken, the resourcefulness that’s honed—matters more than the name of the institution attended”(Bruni). The SAT only tests over mathematics, reading, and writing. The ACT tests over English, mathematics, reading, and science. This means that you only get a tiny summary of what a person knows in any of these subjects. “According to the data, if high school grades are not high, good testing does not promise college success. Students with good grades and modest testing did better in college than students with higher testing and lower high school grades”(Sheffer). If a student knows an overview of the test or if that test is multiple choice, they can just wing it and get a better grade than somebody who actually tried their hardest and studied intensely.
