Some might argue about how original movies that win several awards and have undying fans, but there is evidence and instances where awards are basically bought. NY Times’s Carpetbagger article talks about how much money it means for the movie companies and found out that “ the average Best Picture Oscar winners over the last four years saw a bump of 22.2% or $20.3 million in box office revenue after they were named a nominee and an additional 15.3% or $14.0 million” (Ryzik). So even if your Film doesn’t win an award, the company still gets $14.0 million out of it, but in order to win, people have to vote. The people who vote are all primarily in L.A. ; companies in the Hollywood film industry without a doubt, have taken advantages of this chance. In the a Deadline article, it talk about how Netflix was “offering yard signs for the two shows to residents and commercial storefronts. In exchange for putting up the signs, homeowners are offered their choice of a six-month Netflix subscription, a $50 donation to the Red Cross in their name or a $50 AmEx gift card.”(Andreeva) The article continues on talking about how no one was taking Netflix seriously as a TV network.
