I participated in the AmeriCorps National Service Corps as a Field Team Leader for a year away from home. There, my job was to cultivate supportive relationships within my team and guide the group members while helping underserved and immigrant communities in various states, such as by constructing homes or providing food and shelter. Throughout this year of service, I helped my team members push through their life stressors, discover who they were, and transform into self-sufficient individuals. At the same time, this challenging experience emphasized to me the importance of perseverance in difficult situations, as well as reinforcing my passion for offering service. It also showed me the importance and benefits of working as a team. Since then, whenever I think about practicing medicine, I think about this patient and the fact that a career in medicine is not only about prescribing medicine; it is also about patient education and instilling the desire to maintain healthy lifestyles within patients via using an interprofessional team approach.

As a nurse practitioner, I personally need to overcome the fear of offending my patients by asking uncomfortable questions. During my clinical at UMass Memorial Hospital, I once had a patient who was Vietnamese speaking and was being discharged with the use of an interpreter. Even though my instructors were translated, the documents I gave were not. The interpreter and I spent some time going over her discharge instruction paperwork and translated and wrote down the important parts in Vietnamese. As an AG-ACNP, I will need to work on these literacy barrier
