Throughout the generations, women have been portrayed as the weaker, less useful sex and now, although I immensely disagree with gender stereotypes, it has been established that women have a physical disadvantage. Female athletes typically have 8% of fat whilst Male athletes have 4%. This essentially proves that men can pack more muscle. Contrastingly, do all sports require the sheer capacity of strength? For sports such as badminton and track, it is not a necessity to have a lot of strength. Oestrogen is a female hormone that undoubtedly is prerequisite for endurance. On the other hand, women are more prone to knee injuries such as a tear of a ligament or a fracture as a result of their wider pelvis’. 25% female athletes are likely to experience the same knee injury again even after surgery. Additionally, it has been proven that women take more time for their wounds to heal due to their levels of oestrogen. This clearly shows that women are not only prone to more injuries, they also take longer to heal; therefore, it is inevitable that competing against males, who are more aggressive, will increase the chance of more injuries. Fifteen-year-old, Joel Northrup made the noble decision not to wrestle a girl and forfeit his title to Cassy Herkelman in Linn-Mar high school in Iowa, USA. According to ‘religious.blogs.cnn.com’, Northrup explained that his decision was purely based on biblical reasons. “There is no specific scripture or verse in the Bible that condemns wrestling girls but it is more of a biblical principle”. In addition, Northrup insisted that wrestling was not a profitable sport when competing against girls; “Wrestling is a combat sport, it gets violent at times”. One could argue that in certain sports like wrestling, men aren’t hitting or physically abusing women.
