Social identity theory, (McShane & Steen, 2012), states that individuals define themselves as the groups or teams that they associate themselves with through similarities of emotion and attachment. A synonym for social identity theory is an external self-concept. There are three types of stereotyping when it comes to forming groups in self-concept. The three types are categorization, homogenization, and differentiation.
