National Geographic defines Steve McCurry as one of today’s finest image makers and is well known for his photographs that capture human struggle and joy (2). Recently, the headlines have not been about how great his photographs are, for several of his photographs have come under scrutiny for his use of Photoshop. In today’s society, Photoshop is used frequently to alter images people have captured. Photoshop is a creative tool photographers may use to create vibrant eye catching photographs or alter the image by removing object from their photographs. While the use of Photoshop is okay for someone who is not taking pictures for world known magazines, it is unacceptable for someone of his stature. People believe McCurry damaged his reputation by using Photoshop on his photographs and I am in agreeance that use of Photoshop in his images is unethical and takes away from the original image he captured.

Editing in this manner can create new photographs and change the original perception or message of the photograph. McCurry tried to save his reputation by coming out and stating, “I’m a visual storyteller not a photojournalist” (4). He claims, “I try to be as involved as much as I can in review and supervising the printing of my work, but many times the prints are printed and shipped when I am away” (1). In another statement McCurry made, he tried to take responsibility for his actions, “Reflecting on the situation… even though I felt that I could do what I wanted to my own pictures in an aesthetic and compositional sense, I now understand how confusing it must be for people who think I’m still a photojournalist”
