This essay will focus on the novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The author of this book is John Boyne, a very successful author of 18 books. In this book a boy named Bruno moves from his comfortable house in Berlin to an unwelcoming house in the country side. Bruno, like many other characters in the book, experience trying circumstances. Yet Bruno, and other characters are still able to be good people and still able to be kind to others. The topic of this essay is, ‘The very best of humanity is possible even in the most trying circumstances’.

Shmuel got put into the concentration against his will, leaving his previous life in Cracow in the dust and still tries to help Bruno by keeping him on his side of the fence and out of trouble. In chapter 12 pg. 71 Bruno says he wishes he was on his side of the fence, but Shmuel being a good friend responded saying he shouldn’t want to go over to his side of the fence showing the reader that Shmuel is trying to hep Bruno by keeping him on the right side of the fence. Throughout the book after Bruno meets Shmuel, Shmuel becomes a friend for Bruno, Shmuel knows why Bruno dislikes his house so Shmuel gives Bruno someone to confide in and talk to. In chapter 15 pg. 90 Bruno rats Shmuel out, telling lieutenant Kotler that he doesn’t know Shmuel, but on pg. 91 and 92 Shmuel forgives Bruno for telling Kotler showing Bruno once again his humanitarian side. Forgiving someone for getting you in trouble and beaten shows that Shmuel has had his very hard times but he forgives Bruno without a second thought. Shmuel has had very hard times in his life but he is still able to become friends with Bruno. Shmuel forgave Bruno for getting him in trouble and getting hurt, he also saved Bruno’s life by keeping him on the right side of the fence, and this supports the phrase ‘The very best of humanity is possible even in the most trying
