As a class teacher in a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities setting, I am responsible for the teaching and learning that is delivered in my classroom, the management and direction of a staff team as well as safeguarding and health and safety in my classroom.
Effective safeguarding procedures are crucial, and even more so in a SEND setting where young people may have limited understanding of the world around them and are more vulnerable because they find it harder to interpret the actions of others. All staff in the setting undertake annual safeguarding training and assessment. As part of this training, all staff are required to read part one of Keeping Children Safe in Education which sets out the principles of Keeping Children Safe in Education.

Its purpose is to prevent unsuitable people from gaining access to vulnerable children and young people through employment. The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) conducts checks on potential employees to ensure that the act’s purpose is fulfilled (Social Care Institute for Excellence, 2024). The names of all unsuitable persons are recorded on a list maintained by the Department of Health, as stipulated by the Protection of Children Act 1999 (Oxford Reference, 2024). All staff in the setting are required to hold a valid and regularly updated DBS
