A Modest Proposal to ABC Concerning the Bachelor
“Will you accept this rose Rache--, er, I mean Emily?”, Brad stutters as he offers out his final rose to Emily, who steps out from an identical lineup of big-haired, bright-eyed twenty somethings to claim her prize. “Of course!” she cries out as she grabs the rose and flings her arms around her future husband, a few tears welling up in the corners of her eyes. With the last rose now gone, the rest of the empty-handed women get their things and prepare the Bachelor Mansion. Some leave with tears in their eyes, as they realize they will never have the opportunity to find love again. Others conjure up ways to sabotage Emily or one of the others who did receive a rose. A few are too busy checking their lipstick and fake eyelashes in a mini mirror to even realize the rose ceremony is over. All across the country, thousands of impressionable adolescent girls and young women, watching from their living rooms at home, swoon over the display of love they have just seen. Tuning in weekly, these views are dedicated both physically and emotionally to Brad’s journey to find love. While this is very entertaining and significant for the viewers at home, and most likely the highlight of their week, a very large problem forms. Although she is already in a relationship, it doesn’t consist of her competing with 25 other girls for one man’s affection, so it must not be true love. Some watchers have even taken to Twitter to voice their distresses about not being able to find a genuine relationship like on the show. One user tweeted “the dates on the Bachelor are so cute” and “makes me cry”. No one should be reduced to tears from their lack of a relationship like this poor girl
