They receive scholarships that often include full rides. So if we agree to pay them on top of their education costs that they are already receiving, they will potentially be receiving a large sum of money annually. It is their choice to get involved in the college level sports, and we, as a nation, should not have to compensate students for participating in an extracurricular activity. Students that would be compensated for playing college level sports would create controversial problems. Is the All-American Quarterback for the football team going to get paid more than the star of the women’s basketball team just because the football team brings in more revenue? Compensating student-athletes would bring numerous controversial questions like this one. This would lead to creating inequality within our schooling and within our nation. Most people that want student-athletes to be compensated argue the fact that many of them bring in revenue for their schools, and they should be compensated on how much they bring in.
