In the reading, Kimmel suggests the connotations of the following terms: gender difference, gender inequality, biological determinism, differential socialization, interplanetary theory of gender difference, invisibility of privilege, masculinities, femininities, emphasized femininity, and deceptive distinctions throughout the entire text. The first term is gender difference and inequality, Kimmel believes that there is a correlation between gender inequality and difference. Inequality between men and women are the results due to gender differences and the stance both genders have in society. He argues that because biologically speaking, men and women are vastly different to one another, the sexes are almost from different planets (venus and mars) which supports the contrast of traits between men and women. Next, invisibility of privilege occurs when men or white people aren’t fully aware of the advantages they have simply because of their race or gender, people who don’t completely comprehend their privilege become become defensive because they feel that their sense of entitlement has diminished when women or people of color obtain a position of power. Kimmel defines masculinities and femininities as characteristics related to men (dominant) and women (submissive). The author describes emphasized femininity as a complement to Kimmel’s definition of hegemonic masculinity with is used to “accommodate the interests and needs of men”
