It is easy to see how “A Description of New England” written by John Smith can be read as an advertisement. John Smith is clearly encouraging people to come to New England. He focuses on all the good things about colonizing the new land and barely touches on all the hardships the fist colonists had to endure.
John begins with a series of questions. He asks the reader, "Who can desire more content that to tread and plant the ground he hath purchased by the hazard of his life?" (pg. 69) In a very fancy way he is asking the reader what is better than to own your own land. It almost sounds like a challenge as well asking are you tough enough to risk your life to build you’re your own fortune.
