One similarity between the Spanish and the English was they both used slavery for their economic benefits. Once the Spanish reached the Americas they quickly discovered a new treasure called silver in Nevada, Mexico, and Peru. The silver was located in mines and Spanish decided to use the mit'a system which was used by the Incan empire earlier to extract it. The Spanish required all enslaved peasant male Native Americans to work on the silver mines however many died from disease or from the harsh conditions in the mines. The death of the Native Americans led to the Spanish buying slaves from Africa and making them work in the mines and haciendas.
