Before reading, I assumed "The Cold Equations" was science-fiction oriented. Perhaps it was a darker telling of space travel or what the world would be like in the future. To describe the dark, dangerous depths of space. To my own surprise, I was not wrong! I feel the author was trying to portray real world dilemmas with futuristic settings. In my opinion, it told a rather grim tale from the start. I thought the setting and themes, though dark, were interesting and told well enough to motivate me to keep reading.
