The discussion of summer break has had multiple different perspectives on sustaining summer break or eliminating it entirely. On one hand, people insist on eliminating summer break, not capitalized due to the cause of summer slide and academic skill gaps. In contrast, other viewpoints argue that the benefits of summer break allow for time to develop soft skills and 21st Century Skills. In this case, the issues of summer slide and academic skill gaps are apparent. Still, the benefits of the development of soft skills and work experience could offset the opposing viewpoint. Statistical evidence from the Southern California Consortium on Research in Education discovered that students performing at a traditional school with a regular school year were still outperforming year-round schools based on the Median Academic Performance Index. How is this related to catching up or getting ahead? You’d have to prove the correlation. The data shows that year-round schools are still not performing as well as traditional schools. This could be due to students not having the availability of summer break, which could equate to stress and overworking that ruins their pace of learning.
