Statistics

A surgical site infection (SSI) is an infection that can occur after surgery in the part of the body where the surgery took place. These infections can occur any time from 2-3 days after surgery up until the site is healed [ CITATION Saf18 \l 1033 ]. Surgical site infections can be very dangerous and could lead to death if the correct precautions are not taken. Some SSI’s only involve the skin, while others are more serious and involve organs, tissues under the skin, or implants that were inserted during surgery. The John Hopkins University estimates the chances of developing an SSI to be about 1% to 3% [ CITATION The18
