Survival continues to live longer and prevent death. Some people died although they had a chance to survive, some used their chance or stayed calm and had a clear state of mind to survive, and some died because they panicked and did not know what to do in crisis situations. Mental strength is the state of mind for dealing with difficulties and challenges, physical strength is physically doing something to survive. The most important factors for improving people’s chances of survival are mental and physical strength.

This is significant, because Louie, one of the three men, used his brain to figure out how to etch up the patch area. This impacts the three men’s survival chances because if the patch area was not etched up, the raft would not work anymore and might break, then they would just fall into the water and die. “In the darkness, patching was impossible, but the pumping couldn’t be stopped. They pumped all night long, so drained that they lost the feeling in their arms.” (Hillenbrand 30). This is important, because the three men kept pumping the raft all night long, although it was impossible to patch in the dark and they were drained and even lost the feeling in their arms. They were exhausted, but they did not give up because the pumping could not be stopped to keep the raft working.
