However, the main thing I took away from this novel is that soldier, no matter which war they are in are going to be mentally “broken.” Even though Louie had broken away from death many times, his true troubles began after he was freed from the POW camp. In the prisoner camp, he was tortured and experiments were carried out by the people who captured him. He was also tortured and molested by Watanabe, or “the Bird.” Although he survived all of this torture, Louie was broken. He survived brutal attacks, conditions, and torture. The redemption of Mac ultimately saving Louie from being eaten by a shark changed his view on the loyal crewmate. Finally, resilience changed this man from the track star in his days before the war, to the battlefield star he was by the end. Unfortunately, his mental state after the war affected his everyday life, but after attending a Billy Graham revival, he put himself back together.
