Laura Hillenbrand, the author of Unbroken, grew up in Washington D.C. and began writing around the age of 10. She also became interested in history and horses during her high school years. She attended Kenyon College and met her husband, Borden Flanagan, there. During her college years, she discovered she had chronic fatigue syndrome, which cannot be cured or treated. This forced her to leave her college because this caused her to be too sick to do anything. Battling her syndrome, she wrote the book Seabiscuit based on her love of horse racing, which became a bestseller and found its place at the top of the New York Times Bestsellers list for 42 weeks.
