In the 1800’s and the 1900’s, it was common knowledge that women were not allowed to vote. Although they were citizens of the United States of America, they did not have a choice in choosing who would lead their government. Therefore, this led to women all over the United States to advocate for their right to vote by doing things such as holding protests and giving speeches about why they should be able to vote. For example, Susan B. Anthony wrote the speech Is it a Crime for a Citizen of the United States to Vote? and Emmeline Pankhurst wrote the speech Freedom or Death? Anthony’s speech is very effective because she appeals to the credibility of the United States Constitution and appeals to the logic that every United States citizen is guaranteed their rights. Notably, Anthony in the beginning of her speech explains that she exercised her rights as a citizen of the United States after illegally voting that are “guaranteed to me and all United States citizens by the National Constitution” and then expresses that these rights cannot be taken away by any State. Accordingly, Anthony highlights how her right to vote is given to her and every other United States citizen by the National Constitution. Understandably, this reveals how Anthony appeals to the Constitution by pointing out how the Constitution grants every citizen unalienable rights. Similarly, Anthony goes on to list “The Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, the constitutions of the several states and the organic laws of the territories” to further say that all these things are there to protect the people and allow them to exercise their God-given rights.
