The Swing Youth, or Swingjugend on German, was a youth movement that started in Hamburg and spread to Berlin and other German cities. Unlike Edelweiss Pirates, Swing Youth came mostly from upper class background. Swing Youths challenged German dictator Adolf Hitler by denouncing his order that all adolescents had to join a Hitler Youth group. They challenged the Nazi image of respectable youth by growing their hair long and wearing unconventional clothing. They also listened to illegal music, such as jazz, and ignored curfews and bans on dancing. Swing Youths commitment to jazz led to their criminalization, discrimination, and isolation.
