Sysco’s foundations started in 1969 when a man named Herbert Irving, John F Baugh, and Harry Rosenthal decided to make a food distributor company that is now the best in the world in food distribution. Research was conducted in July 2, 2005 and found that the company had 170 facilities in both the United States and Canada.
Ownership Structure - Public The company remained private from 1969-1970. In March 3, 1970, the company made their stocks public. Back then, they ranked 204th in Fortune 500 companies. In 2010, the Fortune 500 ranked them 7th in Texas and 55th in the U.S. in total revenue. Sysco expanded its territory by acquiring SERCA Foodservices and changed the name to Sysco Canada. They are a multinational corporation that is highly involved in marketing and distributing food to any industry, primarily to restaurants, educational facilities, healthcare, and hotels. All in all, Sysco is the biggest non-oil company in Houston and is the third largest non-oil company in Texas behind Dell and AT&T.
