Inequities in healthcare persist as a sobering reality, disproportionately burdening marginalized communities with the weight of systemic racism. This paper embarks on a critical exploration of the deep-rooted disparities and injustices encompassing within medical systems, particularly focusing on the experiences of racial and ethnic minorities. At its core, this paper scrutinizes the influence of racial bias on every facet of medical practice. From initial diagnoses to treatment options, and from access to care to the quality of care. In this case, there appears to be a lack of humility on the part of management and staff who condone racist practices. Rather than acknowledging and rectifying their discriminatory behavior, they demonstrate arrogance and a refusal to confront their biases. Additionally, the failure of the company to take action despite complaints from African-American employees reflects a lack of humility in admitting wrongdoing and taking responsibility for addressing the issue. “Underrepresented racial minorities in the United States receive worse health care relative to their White counterparts. Structural competency, a framework for recognizing and understanding social influences on health, provides a means for understanding the structural violence that results from and perpetuates racism in classroom and clinical education” (Godley et al., 2020) Empathy Empathy involves understanding and sharing the feelings and perspectives of others. In this case, empathy is notably absent in the actions of those who subjected African-American employees to racial harassment and discrimination. The use of derogatory language and the implementation of policies based on racial preferences demonstrate a lack of empathy for the dignity and well-being of the affected employees. “Desegregated race-based COVID-19 data highlighted the persistent structural inequities in healthcare, income, education, access to government resources, and the impact of colour-blind policies” (Massaquoi, 2023). Furthermore, the failure of management to respond to complaints with empathy and compassion exacerbates the harm experienced by the victims. Discussion: My ethical stance aligns with the imperative to confront and eradicate systemic racism in healthcare.
