We are always told that reading is important, but is it really that important in our world today? Reading has been around for ages. So how can something that has been around for so long still have an impact on the world around us today? There has been a lot of research what the effects of reading has on our brains, society and our economy. The research shows that reading positive affects our brains, our community, and our economy.

Reading is beneficial not only for our brains but for our health too. people who read more are proven to have 67 percent less stress. Also, adults that spend their extra or down time reading have a 32 percent slower rate of cognitive decline compared to adults who did not spend time reading¹. When children read they have so many more benefit. By learning how to read a child is not only developing their brain and expanding their vocabulary, but they are also training their brain to absorb more information so they will get better grades in school². Literacy is a big part of our society and by teaching children to be literate and to like reading we are opening the doors for them to have a brighter future.

In the US most children are taught how to read in elementary school and 75% children can read proficiently by the end of their fourth-grade year, but the other 25% of those students grow up not knowing how to read³. These students that can’t read have a 2 out of 3 chance of either needing welfare or ending up in jail later on in life⁴. Many links have been found between illiteracy and crime rates. In the united states, 85% of teens in the juvenile system are illiterate. In 2015 Kansas city had 1,424 juveniles put behind bars, according to the statistic, 1,210 of the teens were illiterate.
