It might takes months or even years before they can diagnose this complex disease accurately. The patients actually can help the doctors in diagnosing this disease. It can be done by giving a complete and accurate medical history. The result from physical examination and laboratory test helps the doctor to diagnose lupus. They can even consider other diseases that may mimic lupus.
Antinuclear antibodies(ANA) is one of the way to diagnose lupus. Antinuclear antibodies are autoantibodies that bind to contents of the cell nucleus. In normal individuals, the foreign proteins(antigens) get the antibodies from the immune system. But it will be differ for human proteins (autoantigens). In some individuals, antibodies to human antigens are produced. Autoantibody screening is useful in the diagnosis of autoimmune disorders and monitoring levels helps to predict the progression of disease.
