Five million people worldwide are living with an incurable condition that causes the immune system to attack healthy parts of their bodies (Lupus.Org). The disease impacts its victims physically and emotionally, causing great hardship in their lives. Systemic Lupus Erythematous (SLE or Lupus) can affect anyone at any time in their lives. The mysterious illness has taken the healthcare world by storm because of its definite unknown cause and different reaction in patients. Systemic Lupus Erythematous is a complex disease that has an effect on the body and state of mind of its victims. The body’s immune system helps fight off viruses, bacteria, and other foreign invaders to protect the healthy cells and tissues (Meadows 28-34). However, individuals that suffer from Lupus have hyperactive immune systems that can’t tell the difference between healthy tissues and harmful invaders. Lupus is a serious and unpredictable condition that sometimes puts a state of fear or worry on patients. People with Lupus sometimes fear that the condition will worsen or become life-threating. SLE causes harsh symptoms such as, extreme fatigue, aching joints, and skin rashes. This results in depression and grief in Lupus patients because it makes them feel incompetent. Some individuals find it hard to perform normal tasks and develop self-esteem issues. Arletha Manlove of Kansas City, Mo is currently suffering from Systemic Lupus Erythematous. She states that “Everything was a struggle. It was a chore to take a shower and a chore to get dressed. I felt so depressed” (Meadows 28-34).
