Systemic Lupus Erythematosus facts
SLE is an autoimmune disease
SLE is characterised by the production of unusual antibodies in the blood.
The causes of SLE are unknown; however, heredity viruses, ultraviolet light and drugs all may play a role.
Lupus symptoms and signs include;
Appetite loss
Butterfly rash on the face
Hair loss
Fever
Fatigue
Photosensitivity
Raynaud’s phenomenon
Pericarditis
Up to 10% of people with lupus isolated to the skin will develop the systemic form of lupus (SLE)

Treatment of SLE is directed toward decreasing inflammation and/or the level of autoimmune activity with anti-inflammation medications for those with mind symptoms and corticosteroids and/or cytotoxic drugs for those with more severe lupus

Laboratory Test
Blood and urine test may include;
Complete blood count. This test measures the number of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets as well as the amount of haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells. Results may indicate you have low blood cells, which commonly occurs in Lupus. A low white blood cell or platelet count may take place in lupus as well.
Erythrocyte Sedimentation rate. This blood test determines the rate at which red blood cells settle to the bottom of the tub in 60 min. A faster than normal rate may indicate a systemic disease, such as lupus. He sedimentation rate isn’t specific for any disease. It may be evaluated if you have lupus, another inflammation condition, cancer or an infection
